Based on records from 1929, the Winchester Model 55 was a lever-action sporting rifle that was essentially a modern, simplified version of the Model 1894

. Key features included a 24-inch barrel, a half-length tubular magazine, a walnut stock, and a blued finish. 

Specifications
  • Production year: 1929.
  • Model type: In 1929, a Model 55 could be either a takedown or a rarer solid-frame variant. Solid frames were introduced in 1928 and were built on Model 94 receivers, though takedowns still dominated production.
  • Action: Lever-action, with a side-loading gate.
  • Finish: Blued metal.
  • Serial numbers: By 1929, Model 55 rifles used serial numbers from the same range as the Model 94, a practice that began in March 1928.
